Calcined Bauxite

Calcined Bauxite

Calcined bauxite is the main raw material for producing refractory bricks and castables. Due to its high melting point (about 1800 °C) and corrosion resistance, it is widely used as an inner lining for high-temperature equipment such as metallurgical furnaces and cement kilns.

Product Introduction of Calcined Bauxite

High alumina calcined bauxite is one of the main ores of aluminum. Calcined bauxite contains hydrated alumina and aluminum hydroxide, which are formed through the lateritization of aluminum rocks in tropical and subtropical regions. It is obtained by calcining (heating) high-quality bauxite at high temperatures. Calcination is usually carried out at high temperatures ranging from 1200 ° C to 1600 ° C, depending on the intended use of the target product. Hydrated alumina (such as trihydrate alumina and monohydrate alumina) in bauxite is calcined to remove crystal water and convert into stable alpha alumina (corundum), while some impurities (such as silica and iron oxide) undergo phase transformation or form glass phase. The alumina content of the calcined product can reach over 80% to 90%, significantly improving its high temperature resistance and mechanical strength. This can remove moisture and increase the alumina content. Compared with the alumina content of about 57% to 58% in the original bauxite, the alumina content of calcined bauxite is 84% to 88%. Heating is carried out in a rotary kiln.

The production process of Calcined bauxite

Raw material pretreatment

Bauxite is crushed and screened to a suitable particle size (usually 1-5 mm).

Cooling and post-processing

Rapid cooling (water or air cooling) can prevent excessive grain growth and preserve ideal performance.

Calcination equipment

Rotary kilns or vertical kilns are commonly used to achieve mineral phase transition by controlling temperature and time.

Graded packaging

Graded by particle size to meet the needs of different industries.

Calcined Bauxite Applications:

1. Aluminium metallurgy
2. Precision casting / Investment casting:
bauxite grog fines can be made into mold for precision casting.
3. Refractory: high alumina bauxite's refractoriness can reach 1780°C.
It is charactered by good chemical stability and mechanical performance. (Al2O3 ≥48% with low Fe2O3)
4. Aluminium silicate refractory fiber: The high alumina bauxite grog can melt under 2000°C-2200°c in the electric arc furnace. After a series of processing, it can become aluminium silicate refractory
fiber, which can be made into fiber blanket, plate, cloth.
5. Mixing magnesia and bauxite grog with binders to pour the molten steel ladle for better overall lining performance.
6. Producing bauxite cement
7. Abrasives
8. Ceramics industry
9. Chemistry industry for all kinds of aluminium compound.
