Refractory corundum tabular alumina is a pure sintered alpha-alumina material that has been fully densified by rapid-sintering without the use of sintering aids at temperatures in excess of 1900°C. Unlike calcined alumina sintered below 1500℃ or arc-fused white corundum melted at ultrahigh temperature, it features unique plate-like crystalline grains with dense closed spherical pores inside and between crystals.

Products Description

 

Refractory corundum tabular alumina was sintered in the vertical kiln invented by Thomas S. Curis in 1934. After pilot testing in 1935, it was commercially produced and used as a lining material for kilns in the refractory and ceramic industries. Tabular corundum, also known as tabular alumina, refers to recrystallized α-Al2O3 that is rapidly sintered at a high temperature of 1925°C, which is slightly lower than the melting point of α-Al2O3 (2050°C), and the grains have reached complete sintering, showing a two-dimensional plane. The microstructure is plate-shaped and has many intergranular and intragranular circular closed pores.

The crushed finished refractory corundum tabular alumina will undergo strict technical testing to ensure that the various parameters of the product meet the requirements of all parties.

1. Thermal shock resistance
The interlocking plate-like crystal network and uniformly distributed closed spherical pores can effectively buffer the internal thermal stress generated during rapid heating and cooling cycles. Ordinary bauxite refractory materials will crack after less than 20 thermal shock tests, while refractory materials formulated with refractory corundum tabular alumina can withstand more than 80 cycles without structural peeling.
2. Corrosion resistance
Thanks to its ultra-high alumina purity and dense microstructure, our product exhibits chemical inertness towards alkaline steel slag, cement clinker melt, and acidic high-temperature flue gas. When mixed with ladle lining castable, it can prevent molten steel and slag from penetrating into the refractory material, greatly extending the service life of the ladle compared to formulas using brown fused alumina or calcined bauxite.
3. Light load
Its controllable closed cell rate of less than 5% balances compactness and lightness; Unlike high-density fused alumina that adds extra weight to kiln lining, it reduces the overall volume weight of refractory materials in industrial furnaces by nearly 12%, and lowers the long-term mechanical fatigue of furnace steel frames and support structures. Meanwhile, closed pores can prevent the infiltration of liquid media and subsequent volume expansion damage.
4. Flexible compatibility
It can be used independently for high-purity integral refractory materials, or matched proportionally with calcined alumina, brown corundum, spinel powder, and other aggregates to upgrade low alumina alumina based refractory material formulations. Refractory material manufacturers can adjust the mixing ratio of coarse, medium, and fine powders according to their product positioning without the need for additional pre-treatment of raw materials, saving the initial crushing and screening costs in the production workshop.

 

 

Application

 

As can be seen from the name, HUAO's tabular alumina is mainly used as a high-quality refractory material to insulate heat and reduce the loss of various equipment. Such as, steel, casting, cement, petrochemical, ceramics, garbage incineration and other industries.

Other common applications include electrical insulators, kiln furniture and catalyst carriers.

Refractory corundum tabular alumina is an ideal material containing 90-100% alumina for high alumina bricks and amorphous linings. Suitable for ceramic, chemical and water-bound matrices. It can be used alone and in combined systems, as well as with calcined and/or activated alumina. Because refractory corundum tabular alumina, even as a fine powder, exhibits extremely high purity, it can be used to enhance the properties of lower alumina aggregates, such as bauxite and fused brown corundum, using the coarser particles of these aggregates and medium particles and fine powder of tabular corundum. The increase in tabular corundum consumption mainly comes from the continuous casting of steel. Especially for slides, dip tubes and nozzles, the use of tabular corundum is an industry standard requirement.
