Alumina has several very important characteristics that make it one of the popular and commonly used ceramic injection molding materials today:
Temperature stability
Aluminum oxide has extremely high temperature stability, capable of withstanding atmospheric temperatures of 2900 ℉ or 1650 ℃, as well as vacuum temperatures up to 3000 ℉ or 2000 ℃. Components made of alumina maintain 50% of their room temperature tensile strength at 1000 ℃.
Wear resistance
Wear is the behavior of frictional wear of materials, altering their structure, and reducing their suitability under desired conditions. Aluminum oxide has a very high hardness, making it highly resistant to wear and other types of mechanical wear. This means that parts and components made of alumina will maintain their required performance and shape for a longer period of time.
Chemical resistance
Aluminum oxide is chemically inert and non reactive, which means it has a high tolerance to different types of chemicals, including bases and acids. Aluminum oxide will not cause surface and structural damage due to exposure to salt and solvent solutions at high temperatures, which further extends the durability and lifespan of different components.
Density
The density of a material is its mass divided by its volume, expressed in g/cm3 or grams per cubic centimeter, which means that the density of a material is inversely proportional to its volume. Aluminum oxide is composed of fine particles that do not have voids in the material. The fewer voids there are, the higher the density and volume. The density of alumina varies at different temperatures, with a standard density of 3.965g/cm3 at 25 ℃.
Mechanical performance
The mechanical properties of materials involve their strength, which refers to the strain and stress that materials can withstand before fracture. Aluminum oxide has very high strength, and only higher purity can further improve it.
Dielectric and thermal properties
Aluminum oxide is very suitable for insulation purposes because it can prevent current from passing through it. In addition, it is highly resistant to thermal shock, which is also one of the characteristics of this ceramic technology, and further improves with the increase of purity.
Hardness
Hardness refers to the ability of a material to withstand mechanical wear and tear. In this regard, alumina is harder than tungsten carbide and steel tools. It has a hardness of HRA80-90, which only diamonds can surpass.
