92% vs 95% Al₂O₃ - Which Purity Delivers Superior Wear Resistance?

The Mohs scale is a "scratch ranking" of a material's resistance. Fingernails rate about 2.5, a steel knife 5.5, window glass 6.5, and the quartz in ordinary sand is 7. Alumina tiles reach 8.5 to 9, placing them among the hardest materials in nature. They can easily leave scratches on quartz. In plain terms, everyday abrasive media can hardly cause indentation damage to them.

 

If we only look at the Mohs number, both 92 and 95 tiles can reach 9, easily beating quartz. The real difference lies in how tightly the grains are bonded. The 95% alumina body has a denser grain bond and less glass. When material hits at high speed, the grains are harder to pluck out. Think of two walls: both have good bricks, but the 95 wall uses better cement. Over time, it loses far fewer particles, so the overall wear loss is lower.

 

If you face moderate abrasion where material mainly slides with low impact, the Mohs 9 hardness of 92 tiles is perfectly sufficient and extremely cost-effective. But when handling sharp ore, high-drop chutes, or corrosive conditions, the denser structure of 95 tiles keeps the surface smooth much longer and reduces frequent downtime for liner replacement.In short, the hardness is the same, but who is more wear-resistant depends on the structural advantage brought by the additional 3% alumina.
